At least 14 revelers have been killed and dozens injured in a horrific fire at a nightclub in Thailand.
The shocking footage shows panicked partygoers fleeing the scene in flames at Mountain B Bar in Sattahip, Chonburi Province, about 40 kilometers from the popular tourist destination of Pattaya. Sun report.
Shortly before 1:00 am on Friday, Inferno crashed through the building.
Revelers, including many tourists, were trapped inside the one-story building and burned alive as other patrons screamed and tried to escape.
One of the casualties was Chatchai Chuenkha, a 30-year-old singer who was playing in his band at the time.
Authorities were searching the charred remains of the building Friday morning to determine the cause of the fire.
Thai police said a number of bodies were found next to a DJ booth where two explosions were believed to have occurred.
The fire spread quickly because the building was covered with highly flammable sound insulation foam, they added.
More than 20 fire trucks, police and ambulances arrived at the venue. At least 40 people were injured and taken to hospital.
Police Colonel Boonsong Inkyung, deputy investigator of the Pultar Luang Police Station in the area, said:
“Some people ran away from the building with burns.
“The fire was difficult to control as there were highly flammable objects in the building, especially the sound absorbing foam solution.”
Chonburi Provincial Police Chief Atassit Kitchahan said the owner, Ms Thanyapat Songswanhiran, said the fire started on the roof and spread rapidly downwards.
Some of the injured were inhaling smoke and injured while fleeing the building.
Authorities said it took about three hours to extinguish the fire. Police and firefighters are currently investigating the cause.
It’s been more than a decade since the 2009 fire that killed 66 people at the Santika Club in the capital’s Ekkamai district.
