2022 National Indigenous Fashion Awards Winners Announced

Deni Francisco’s brand Ngali from the Warmun Art Center won the Fashion Designer Award at the 2022 National Indigenous Fashion Awards (NIFA), which was unveiled last night in Darwin.

Francisco was one of six winners announced for the award, which was sponsored by Australian fashion retailer Country Road. These awardees recognize and celebrate the innovation, diversity and ethical practices in fashion and textiles of Indigenous peoples.

Other winners of this year’s 2022 National Indigenous Fashion Awards are:

  • Traditional Decoration Award – Esther Yarllarlla, supported by the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair Foundation.
  • Community Collaboration Award – Supported by Mimili Maku Arts, Linda Puna x Unreal Fur, Canberra Center.
  • Business Achievement Awards – Supported by Laura Thompson, Clothing The Gaps and KIN Fashion.
  • Ngarru Miimi Wearable Art Award – Liraldia Briggs – Houston, NT Sponsored by the Government.
  • TEXTILE DESIGN AWARD – Philomena Yetman – Yalaba Arts & Cultural Precinct sponsored by RMIT.

The event was organized by the Indigenous Fashion Project of the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair Foundation and supported by the NT Government.

Creative Director Shiloh McNamee said NIFA will continue to attract local and global attention, celebrate creatives across the industry, and provide a platform that provides avenues and opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The judging panel for this year’s event was Yatu Widders Hunt, Director of Cox Inal Ridgeway and Danguti and Anaiwan Women; Pruellen Thomas, Head of Marketing and Communications, Australia Fashion Council; It consisted of Jacquelyn Rivera, the manager. Perina Drummond, Head of Womenswear at Country Road and Creative Director and Founder of Jira Models, said:
