5G is coming to more Australian telcos

It seems that 5G plans will be offered to more carriers in the near future. This is good news for those who prefer shops other than the Big 3.

On Monday, Optus announced that it is offering 5G services to wholesale partners or mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs).

What is an MVNO?

If you do not know the MVNO, we will contact you. Australia has only three telephone networks: Telstra, Optus and Vodafone. However, you may have noticed that there are many small businesses that also offer telephone and internet services. These are MVNOs.

What these companies do is buy services at wholesale prices from one of the three major telephone companies and resell them to their customers. This means that whenever you sign up for a plan from your MVNO, it is powered by either Telstra, Optus, or Vodafone.

With that in mind, it’s always worth checking which carriers small companies rely on for their services, so you can choose the one that suits your coverage needs.

Optus 5G

So what this news means is that MVNOs on the Optus network will be able to offer 5G plans to their customers. This is Australia’s first telephone company to do this with wholesale partners.

At the moment, SpinTel is the only company to accept this proposal, but understands that more companies will need to follow suit.

According to Optus, more than 900 5G sites are currently on across Australia except Tasmania and the Northern Territory.

Optus and SingTel 5G plans

You can work around the issue when comparing Optus and SpinTel plans.

SpinTel’s $ 30 / month service, the cheapest 5G plan with 10GB of data.

But if you’re looking for more data, we recommend the $ 40 / month 50GB 5G plan and the $ 50 / month 80GB plan.

I don’t know if there is 5G coverage

If you’re not sure if you have 5G in your area, here are some tools to help you solve it.

The first is an interactive coverage map showing whether Optus or Telstra 5G is available near you. You may notice that Vodafone 5G coverage is not included. This is because some areas, such as Parramatta, are still primarily in testing.

Also, if you want to see the exact address, this tool will tell you if you have 5G coverage. All you need to do is add your address when searching for a phone plan, and it will let you know if you were lucky.
