A series of violent sexual attacks over the last few weeks has triggered protests in the capital, Dhaka, and elsewhere.

Local human rights groups say rape is on the rise in the country. Ain-o-Salish Kendra, a women’s rights group, said 889 rapes, including many mass rapes, occurred between January and August. It said at least 41 victims were killed.

Rights groups say more cases remain unreported due to the risk of harassment by influential people. Bangladesh’s judicial system is painstakingly slow, and cases often take years to reach a conclusion.

Protests have recently occurred after a video of a group of men stripping and attacking women in the southeastern region was released on Facebook. An investigation by the National Human Rights Commission of Korea found that the woman in the video was repeatedly raped and terrorized last year.

In another case, a woman was dragged into a college dormitory from a car she was traveling with her husband and gangbanged. Several people in the student division of the ruling Awami League have been arrested.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said she would bring the person in charge to trial.
