New video shows 50 meters of Nord Stream pipe destroyed

Underwater images released Tuesday show that at least 50 meters of the Nord Stream 1 pipeline have been destroyed or buried under the seabed in what appears to be a sabotage explosion.

In a video released by the Swedish newspaper Expressa large crack and twisted metal can be seen in the Nord Stream 1 pipeline 80 meters below.

A video taken on Monday showed more than 50 meters of the pipeline missing or buried in the seafloor, according to the newspaper, with a long crack in the seafloor leading up to the ruptured pipe. .

The damage is widely believed to have been caused by Russian attacks, but Moscow disputes this.

Trond Larsen, drone operator at Norwegian company Blueye Robotics, told Expressen:

Larsen, who piloted the underwater drone that captured the video, said he could also confirm that “there was a very large impact on the seafloor around the pipe.”

Two Nord Stream pipelines were damaged by an explosion in the Baltic at the end of September, causing four leaks.

The leaks occurred on the high seas, two of them in Danish exclusive economic zone and two in Swedish waters.

Swedish authorities announced on October 6 that they had conducted an underwater survey of the site, collected “pieces of evidence”, and that the investigation confirmed suspicions of sabotage.

Meanwhile, Danish police said on Tuesday they had completed several tests of the leak in the Danish zone, along with intelligence agency PET.

“Inspections have confirmed extensive damage to Nord Stream 1 and 2 in Denmark’s exclusive economic zone, which was caused by a powerful explosion,” they said in a statement.

Danish police also said they would set up a joint investigation team with PET to continue the investigation, but said it was too early to say what international cooperation with Sweden and Germany would look like. .

The pipeline linking Russia and Germany is at the center of geopolitical tensions, with Russia cutting gas supplies to Europe in alleged retaliation for Western sanctions after Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

The pipeline is owned by Russian state-owned energy company Gazprom.

Moscow blames the US for the damage.

The pipeline was out of service, but contained gas before falling victim to an apparent act of sabotage.
