On Saturday morning, SEN’s Sam Edmund revealed that Sled was “cruel from the Lions captain and focused on his family’s health.”
“What happened is unfit to be a captain. These are not the words of a soccer club captain,” respected sports broadcaster Gerald Waitley echoed hundreds of similar tweets on the matter on Saturday.
AFL reporter Tom Brown also voiced his opinion after confirming that the AFL would investigate the incident.
“It’s an interesting test for the broad defamation rule (I don’t know what was said),” he said.
However, Melbourne football general manager Alan Richardson said the AFL was involved, but all parties were happy with the state of the event.
“Yeah, they’re[involved]. I’ve spoken to the AFL and my understanding is that they’re pretty happy with the place,” Richardson said.
“I can’t speak for them, but that’s certainly the tone I got based on the fact that Dane[Zorko]apologized and Harrison Petty is really happy with the position.
“As a Footy Club, we are happy with the current situation.
“They have been very sincere in their apology.
Zorko also issued a statement on Saturday addressing the issue.
“I apologized to Harrison for making inappropriate comments to him last night,” he said.
“I am sorry for my actions and take full responsibility for the harm done to Harrison, his family and Melbourne Football Club.
“Looking back, I understand that I need to be a better leader, and I have spoken with the club who have bolstered this.”
Senior Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin told reporters after the game that the hurtful comments were indeed about Petty’s next of kin.
“Petz was a little upset because he thought he heard something inappropriate about his family,” he said.
“Brisbane are talking to us and obviously the AFL will look into it.”
Fellow Demons defender Stephen May put his arm around Petty, who was also seen talking to Mark Williams, Troy Chaplin, and Goodwin.
“Petz was getting a little emotional at the third minute of quartertime. He walked off, reset himself and got back in the game,” Goodwin said.
“Brisbane are very sorry for us and that is the type of football club they are. They are a very respected and humble football club and we take their word for it. .”
