It has taken Ange Postecoglou no time at all to make an impact on English football’s top-flight, a fact recognised by his award as the Premier League’s first Manager of the Month for the 2022-23 season.
After less than five weeks of action, Tottenham’s boss, the first Australian to manage an EPL side, was saluted on Friday for overseeing a whole new feelgood atmosphere and an immediate attacking transformation in a down-to-heel side who are still unbeaten in the league since he arrived.
The 58-year-old becomes only the second Australian man ever to win one of the Premier League’s monthly awards, joining Mark Schwarzer, who won Player of the Month when he was Fulham’s goalkeeper back in February 2010.
Postecoglou, who guided Spurs to wins over Manchester United and Bournemouth and a draw with Brentford over his first three matches in August, is also the first manager since Huddersfield Town’s David Wagner to lift the prize in their first month in the division.
Postecoglou beat four other distinguished nominees – Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta, Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola, Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp and West Ham’s David Moyes – after voting from the public was combined with verdicts from a panel of football experts.
It marked a double for Spurs, with Postecoglou’s star signing James Maddison also kicking off his spectacular season by taking the August Player of the Month gong.
“It’s a brilliant achievement for him in his first month as a Premier League manager,” Maddison said of his boss who’s guided Spurs to second in the table. “I’m sure he’ll say it’s all about the team – but he’s been brilliant with all the lads.”
The recognition comes at the end of a week when Postecoglou was also short-listed for FIFA’s Best Men’s Coach of the Year award, with his brilliant start at Spurs coming after his domestic trophy treble in Scotland with Celtic.
He’s up against treble-winning Guardiola, Inter Milan’s Simone Inzaghi, Napoli’s former Serie A-winning and now Italian national boss Luciano Spalletti and Barcelona’s La Liga-winning Xavi for that international award.
