Federal and State Governments Join Forces to Help Flood Victims

Assistance will be provided to those affected by the horrific flood disaster across Victoria as the federal government joins forces with the state government.

The government has set up a National Resilience Center in Mickleham to provide crisis care to those in need of accommodation.

Starting next Tuesday, the Mickleham facility will provide 250 beds for those left homeless in the floods.

Residents can receive foot and other support services on-site as well as remotely.

The Commonwealth built and owned the Mickleham site, which was recently closed as a quarantine hub, so it could open its doors to flood victims.

Emergency Management Victoria, along with Emergency Recovery Victoria and Covid-19 Quarantine Victoria, are working together to set up facilities using existing quarantine staff and service providers to provide rapid assistance to those in need.

The center serves as a hub, with residents providing free and regular shuttle services to local train stations and shopping centres.

All rooms provided for those in need have toiletries and essentials, and three meals per day are provided.

Local charities are working to provide clothing and other items that families may have had to leave behind in the floods.

Pets are welcome with family members but must be restrained on a leash or carrier outside the cabin.

The center also provides 24-hour onsite medical care, including mental health support and support for certain injuries.

First responders will assess those most in need of urgent care in the flood zone, but anyone in need can access Emergency Management Victoria’s support services at 1800 560 760 starting Monday.

While visiting flood-affected areas on Sunday, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the government was ensuring Victorians had a safe roof over their heads after the floods. said.
