Billy Slater Responds to Mark Carroll’s Criticism Ahead of State of Origin 3

Queensland coach Billy Slater has countered Blues legend Mark Carroll’s critical remarks about the Maroons’ forward pack following their heavy defeat in Game 2. After a humiliating 38-18 loss where Blues forwards like Angus Crichton, Payne Haas, Liam Martin, and Cameron Murray dominated, Slater faced calls for changes leading into the series decider at Suncorp Stadium.

Despite pressure, Slater has stood firm on some selections, including promoting Kurt Capewell to start in the back-row. His decision to omit David Fifita entirely surprised many, while Dragons’ Jaydn Su’A was also dropped from the squad. In contrast, the Blues have retained their forward lineup unchanged, backing the incumbents ahead of Game 3.

Carroll’s critique of Queensland’s forward presence stirred controversy ahead of the decider. He questioned the Maroons’ intimidation factor, suggesting they lacked the aggressive edge needed for the match. “These Queensland forwards wouldn’t scare kids in a creche,” Carroll remarked, highlighting the absence of players like Fifita who could provide game-changing impact.

Slater defended his team amidst the criticism, emphasizing the collective effort required for success. “It’s a 17-man team game, and everyone has to fulfill their role,” Slater stated, acknowledging Queensland’s need to elevate their performance after a lackluster showing in Melbourne.

Regarding reports of discord with Broncos star Selwyn Cobbo over training methods, Slater dismissed the rumors as “fake news.” He clarified that Cobbo is fully engaged and ready to play, reaffirming their strong working relationship ahead of the crucial State of Origin decider.
