Britain’s Ali wins first Saudi women’s boxing match in seconds
Somali-born Briton Ramla Ali won the first professional women’s boxing match in Saudi Arabia on Saturday by knocking out Crystal Garcia Nova in a stunning first-round bout.
Just seconds into the fight, after already connecting heavy shots to the head and body, Ali flew Nova’s gum shield with a hard right that slammed into the Dominican fighter’s jaw.
Ali, a former refugee from the war in Somalia and fighting at super-bantamweight, is currently 7-0 in his professional career as he moves towards an expected world title attempt.
“The fact that the organizers have invited me to the competition and allowed this battle to proceed really shows the cultural shifts in the landscape that are happening in the region,” she said.
Saturday’s fight was the undercard for a world heavyweight clash between Anthony Joshua and defending champion Oleksandr Usyk.
