China ends cooperation with US over Taiwan dispute

China announced on Friday that it would end cooperation with the United States on a range of key issues, including climate change, anti-drug efforts and military talks, as relations between the two superpowers plummeted over Taiwan.

Taiwan has also criticized Beijing’s handling of the visit, with Prime Minister Su Tseng-chang calling on allies to push for de-escalation.

Pelosi, who has also been sanctioned by Beijing, defended her visit to Taiwan and said on Friday Washington would “not allow” China to isolate the island.

Beijing said military exercises would continue until noon on Sunday, and Taipei said 68 Chinese aircraft and 13 warships crossed the “median line” down the Taiwan Strait on Friday.

They added that they also saw Chinese warships sailing through the Taiwan Strait.

State broadcaster CCTV reported that a Chinese missile hit the airspace above Taiwan.

“These provocative actions are a significant escalation,” US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said after meeting with Southeast Asian foreign ministers at the ASEAN summit in Phnom Penh.

China’s foreign minister responded by warning Washington not to escalate tensions.

“I would like to warn the United States against acting too quickly and inviting greater danger,” he said.

Japan’s foreign ministry said on Friday that China had canceled a planned bilateral meeting on the sidelines of a scheduled ASEAN summit.
