Commonwealth Games 2022: Sri Lanka players missing, Birmingham police investigating, passports confiscated

The team has confirmed that three members of the Sri Lanka team have gone missing at the Commonwealth Games.

The Sri Lankan team says they were unable to find two players and one team official.

Sri Lanka’s local news agency reports that the team’s head of delegation, retired army general Dhampus Fernando, has confiscated the passports of all remaining players and officials brought to Birmingham by the state.

“After the incident, we asked all players and officials to submit their passports to their respective venue officials in all villages,” he said.

“Police are investigating and the three are unable to cross the UK border. It’s really unfortunate what happened.”

The team has confirmed reports that the players involved were wrestlers, judo players and judo coaches.The team says they haven’t been since Monday.

Judo and wrestling events are held at Coventry Arena, a 30-minute drive from Birmingham.

Sri Lanka selected a 161-man delegation of 110 athletes and 151 officials.

Athletes and officials have been granted standard 180-day visas by the UK government for the event.
