Commonwealth Games: Kelsey-Lee Barber pips fellow Australian Mackenzie Little for javelin gold

World Champion Kelsey Lee Barber’s Last Gasp Clutch Throw enabled her to snatch the Commonwealth Games javelin gold medal from Australia’s Mackenzie Little.

Barber, who was on the verge of winning the gold medal, hit a winning throw of 64.43 to beat Little by just 16 cm on his sixth and final attempt.

Little, who just missed out on a bronze medal at the recent World Championships, appeared to win gold in her Commonwealth Games debut after throwing two personal bests to take the top spot heading into the final round. .

But Barber had other plans, triggering a monster throw to secure the win and Little had to settle for a well-deserved silver medal. Barber made a statement with his 63.52 m throw in the first, but with the exception of one throw, in his next four out of the distance he failed to come within 3 meters.

With a personal best opening throw of 64.02 m paved the way for Little, the 25-year-old kept the pressure on Barber with a series of impressive throws.

The only other competitor to reach the 60m mark was India’s Annu Rani, and it soon became apparent that it was an All-Australian battle for the gold medal, when Little achieved his second personal best in the final. , looked as if he had won a gold medal. She threw 64.27m on her fifth throw.

With just one throw left, Little got the crowd involved, and they yelled at her when she made a decisive enough effort to slip past Little’s best effort and move to the gold medal spot.

With a third personal best in the Finals and little chance of reclaiming the top spot, her sixth and final throw fell short to seal a dramatic victory for Barber.
