COVID-19 is Australia’s ‘third leading cause of death so far in 2022’.

COVID-19 is believed to have killed more people in Australia so far this year than some of the traditionally biggest killers such as cardiovascular disease and lung cancer.
A new analysis by the Actuaries Institute shows that COVID-19 will kill 7,100 people by the end of July, making it the third leading cause of death in 2022.
Only ischemic heart disease and dementia are expected to cause more deaths than COVID-19, causing about 10,000 deaths each.

About 5,500 and 5,400 deaths from cardiovascular disease, including stroke, and lung cancer were expected this year, according to the analysis.

The excess mortality rate for the year to the end of April was 13%, or 6,800, more than half of which were due to COVID-19.
Elayne Grace, chief executive of the institute, said the modeling provided valuable insight.
“This is valuable data for our public health policymakers, and we need to inform flexible, safe and actionable public health responses,” she said.
This is according to a new study by researchers in Melbourne, who have found that the rare side effect of myocarditis from the COVID-19 mRNA vaccine is milder in adolescents and young adults than complications from the virus itself.

A study from Monash Children’s Hospital showed that heart disease in adolescents aged 12 to 18 is less common and follows a “mild, self-resolving clinical course.”

None of the 33 patients presented with congestive heart failure or required intensive care, inotropic support, immunoglobulin or steroid therapy.
All patients improved after treatment with high-dose ibuprofen.
The vaccine-associated myocarditis study is the largest reported in a single children’s hospital.
Elsewhere, Monday’s ACT extended the public health emergency declaration until 11:59 p.m. on Sept. 30, averaging fewer than 1,000 new cases of the virus per day.

ACT Health Minister Rachel Stephen Smith said: “This level of community transmission still poses a risk to community members, especially those at risk of serious consequences.
