Several communities on both sides of the Victoria-New South Wales border remain at risk as parts of the Murray River are expected to peak from tomorrow.

People in the northern Victorian town of Echuca spent most of yesterday building a makeshift sandbag tax to protect thousands of homes and businesses.

More than 1,000 properties have already been flooded after the Kampaspe River, which flows from central Victoria into the Murray River, burst.

Officials fear flooding could isolate the rural town of Keran, about 95 kilometers northwest of Echuca, for up to a week.

Across the border, residents of the Moama caravan park near Echuca and the nearby indigenous community Kalamagunja were told to evacuate yesterday. Moama residents are reportedly expecting major flooding beginning Thursday.

Some areas in Victoria, such as Malibenon in northwest Melbourne, have moved to the decontamination phase. Yesterday, the state government announced his $351 million flood recovery package.

Meanwhile, the Mitchell Shire Council, which governs the town of Seymour, about an hour’s drive north of Melbourne, has come under scrutiny after voting two years ago to abandon a planned embankment along the banks of the Goulburn River. I’m here. Late last week, Seymour’s Main Street was submerged due to water levels not seen since 1916.
