Melbourne, Victoria: First public IVF clinic opens

Victorians have access after Australia’s first IVF clinic opened in Melbourne on Tuesday, giving hope to many looking to have a baby.

The clinic will be the first in the country to offer free fertility treatment to those struggling to conceive.

The clinic is operated by the Royal Women’s Hospital and Monash Health and is capable of serving 4,000 childbearing women annually.

Each cycle of IVF costs at least $10,000, so the clinic will help remove barriers for people wanting to have a baby, Andrews said.

“IVF can be a game-changer for people who may be struggling to have children, but too often it is financially out of reach.

The clinic has been allocated $70 million from the 2021 budget and was a campaign promise of the Andrews administration in 2018.

If re-elected, the prime minister has promised to expand its services to 5,000 women, and the clinic could be expanded next year.

The campaign pledge also includes $13.5 million to expand services to rural areas.

In addition to IVF treatment, fertility preservation, genetic testing, donor and surrogacy services, and public sperm and egg banks are also available.
