You’re not alone if you’re feeling more anxious as you approach the 2020 election day.
In fact, Election Stress Disorder (ESD) is real and many people struggle during this time.
The term was first coined in 2016 by Steven Stosny, the founder of Compassion Power.
Although it is not always possible to diagnose ESD, it is certainly a real problem that countless individuals, especially those in the community left out of society, have to deal with it.
2020 was a year of trash fires between COVID-19, racism, wildfires, and crazy news cycles. So it’s no wonder people are stressed.
It’s hard to separate yourself from thinking about elections (well, because it’s a reality), but it’s important for us to find a way to deal with anxiety.
There are several ways to help you deal with tensions and feel a little more Zen by the election day.
This may be obvious, necessary.. After spending some time on Instagram or Twitter, if you feel uneasy, remove the app completely from your smartphone.
You may have withdrawal symptoms for a few days, but in the end your mental health will thank you.
However, do not completely separate it from the news. That way, you’re more likely to worry that you’re missing something.
Instead, check one news site every morning and evening. Read the article you want to read, see what’s going on, and then move away from the internet!
Write down your feelings
Take the time of the day to record your thoughts and feelings, whether in the morning or in the evening.
Write whatever you think, and don’t worry about how it sounds or if there are misspellings.
We tend to pack a lot of emotions and thoughts, which can increase anxiety, so it would be helpful if we could write them down on paper.
Move your body and your mind
As Elle Woods once said, “Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don’t shoot their husbands. They don’t!”
You shouldn’t keep in mind everything El Woods says, but she’s right about the exercise!
Take your time every day, whether it’s intense CrossFit-style workouts or a 30-minute walk through the neighborhood.
In addition to exercising your body, try to meditate as often as you can. This will help clear your mind and allow you to focus on what is happening at the present moment.
