Fitness apps have helped people stay fit during COVID lockdown

While mobile fitness trackers have helped people stay fit during the pandemic lockdown, research has found that the devices are also adding to the stress of COVID-19 information overload.

Article published in the latest issue of the journal PLOS Digital Health examines how technology was used around the world during the height of the pandemic from July to September 2020.

An international team led by Huong Ly Tong, a PhD candidate at the University of Sydney, surveyed over 500 people in 32 countries and found that 83% used the app to stay active Did.

“The study found that people who use mobile apps are more likely to be active,” said Tong.

“This shows that technology can play an important role in promoting healthy behaviors, even in the unique context of a pandemic.”

About a third of those surveyed, mostly Australian, said the app also helped them manage their mental health.

But the authors also found that apps and social media are double-edged swords.
