Genetic studies suggest that Americans have been infected with the coronavirus twice

Reinfections are rarely reported, despite more than 37 million cases recorded worldwide.

Five reinfections have been recorded so far since the outbreak began at the end of last year. Only one other patient in Ecuador suffered a more severe illness a second time. It can also be transmitted many times without the knowledge of a person without symptoms.

Men in Nevada were first virus-positive in mid-April after experiencing headaches, coughing, nausea, and diarrhea. He had no underlying condition that could exacerbate his illness. He was isolated and improved by the end of the month.

However, at the end of May, the man consulted with an emergency medical center complaining of fever and dizziness in addition to the symptoms he experienced the previous month. Five days later, he was hospitalized for shortness of breath, was oxygenated, and was once again positive for COVID-19.

Scientists have sequenced the genomes of patient virus samples and found significant differences. This suggests that men are infected with two different variations of the coronavirus.

The researchers said they didn’t know why the second infection worsened. The patient may have been exposed to a second high dose of the virus, the version he encountered was more toxic, or the presence of antibodies from the first infection was due to a twist observed with another coronavirus. It may even have been there. Some sort of deactivation-reactivation dynamic infection may have occurred continuously, but they write that it is unlikely.

“There are still many unknowns,” said Mark Pandri, director of the Nevada Institute for Public Health and lead author of the study. “Our findings show that previous SARS-CoV-2 infections do not always prevent future infections. The potential for reinfection is COVID, especially in the absence of an effective vaccine. -19 Can have a significant impact on the understanding of immunity. “
