‘Georgy Girl’ ‘Seekers’ singer Judith Durham dies at 79

Washington [US]August 6th (ANI): Judith Durham, the Australian folk music legend whose voice the band The Seekers had several international hits with, has died at the age of 79.

Durham died Friday night at Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital from complications of lung disease, according to Deadline. Musicoast Records her label and Universal Music Australia both announced her obituary.

Durham joined The Seekers in 1963 and thanks to their vocal harmonies, the four became the first Australian band to achieve significant chart and commercial success in the UK and US. His hits “Carnival Is Over,” “I’ll Never Find Another You,” “A World Of Our Own,” and “Georgie Girl” have sold over 50 million records.

Durham began his solo career in 1968, but recorded again with The Seekers in the 1990s.

“Today is a sad day for Judith’s family, fellow Seekers, Musicoast staff, the music industry, fans around the world, and all of us who have long been a part of Judith’s life,” Simpson said.

Her bandmates in The Seekers Keith Potger, Bruce Woodley and Atholl Guy said their lives would be forever with the loss of “our dear lifelong friend and brilliant star.” He said he changed.

“Her struggle was fierce and heroic. She didn’t complain about her fate and fully accepted its fate. Keith, Bruce and I shared her magnificent musical legacy. We are so blessed to be together,” they said in a joint statement.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described Durham as “a national treasure and an Australian icon” and said, “Judith Durham will give voice to new elements of our identity and pave the way for a new generation of Australian artists.” “Her kindness will be missed by many. The national anthem she gave to our country will never be forgotten,” Albanese wrote on Twitter.

“Her unique voice and stage presence leading the Seekers have made the band one of Australia’s biggest chart toppers,” he said.
