Video of parkour man jumping off Melbourne building goes viral as police issue warnings

A stunning video has surfaced showing a man leaping between buildings in Melbourne’s Flinders Lane over the weekend and performing some amazing parkour.

A video transmitted to 3AW radio station showed the man leaping from the edge of the parking lot onto the roof of an adjacent building across a gap believed to be about 10 meters wide.

This movement is an extreme version of parkour, a practice or sport used to traverse an urban landscape by jumping, vaulting, rolling and climbing in order to move from one place to another as quickly as possible.

Matthew “Chippa” Campbell, founder of the Australian Parkour Foundation, has nearly 20 years of experience in the sport. abc radio melbourne He did not tolerate leaps, but many calculations were involved.

“I think people perceive me as an idiot who doesn’t know what he’s doing and is just trying to get media attention, but he’s not,” he said.

“They have spent years preparing to reach that level.

“There is no doubt in his mind that he will succeed, otherwise they will not succeed.”

police issue a warning

In a statement, Victoria Police said they were aware of the incident but had not made an official report.

“Anyone who engages in this type of behavior faces significant risk of injury or death.

“They could also face trespassing charges, among other crimes.”

Safety first

Campbell’s work as a stuntman has seen him jump from building to building, but with net and wire security, his approach was safety first.

“You have a way of measuring distance, so you can bring those measurements back and practice on the ground,” he said.

“I could spend years [practising] And that’s what people don’t understand. Jumps can be practiced for years. ”

Campbell said it’s also easy to identify if someone has been trained in the sport.

“You can see their technique,” he said.

“For me, moving is a lot like learning a new language. If you don’t know what you’re looking at, it’s all gibberish.

“Once you learn it, you will see technique, movement and control.”

join the group instead

Campbell hopes the video will inspire people to learn parkour rather than have them try it themselves.

“There are a lot of people who think it’s silly and treat people who do parkour like idiots,” he said.

“But especially in Melbourne, Australia, you can find a lot of really great people trying to improve themselves through training.”

Campbell said he had considered doing the same jump.

“I saw it, but I didn’t do it,” he said.
