Judith Durham dies at 79: Seekers singer’s cause of death revealed

Tributes to beloved Australian entertainer Judith Durham who passed away “peacefully” at the age of 79 after a long illness.

The former lead singer of The Seekers, who gained international fame for his immense talent, died in Melbourne on Friday night in palliative care.

She was admitted to Alfred Hospital and died as a result of complications from years of chronic lung disease.

The singer, songwriter and musician formed The Seekers in 1962 with Ashol Guy, Bruce Woodley and Keith Pogger.

With hits like Georgy Girl and The Carnival Is Over, they were the first Australian pop group to achieve major success in the UK and US, paving the way for other stars like Olivia Newton-John.

The Seekers hold the record for the largest concert attendance in the Southern Hemisphere, with approximately 200,000 people attending their March 1967 show.

They were jointly named Australian of the Year in 1967.

Durham eventually left the group and had a successful solo career, but she continued to reunite with the Seekers over the years.

Each Seekers member was honored as an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2014.

Durham’s band members shared their tributes to her “magnificent musical legacy” on social media.

“Our lives are forever changed with the loss of a dear lifelong friend and shining star,” they said.

“Her struggle was fierce and heroic.

Her sister Beverly Sheehan also spoke of the closeness they shared.

“Judith’s joie de vivre, relentless optimism, creativity and generosity have always inspired me.

Durham’s family is asking for privacy at this time.

Commonwealth Arts Minister Tony Burke said Durham “was one of Australia’s most famous voice actors”.

“With The Seekers and solo, Judith has established herself as an icon in our music.

“In 1967, 10% of the Melbourne population attended a single gig.

“What a contribution. What a loss. I am Australian will be played forever. RIP.”

Entertainer Anthony Carea posted, “Added angelic voices in the sky.”
