A U.S. detective investigating a possible mob killing decades ago said Thursday he found a gun near where a body in a barrel was found on the bottom of a vaporizing Las Vegas lake.
This year, numerous bodies have been uncovered in the rapidly receding Lake Mead. Mafia watchers speculate that the bodies in the barrels were at the hands of gangsters from Gambling Heaven’s crime-filled past.
Las Vegas police tweeted, “A firearm was recovered at Lake Mead National Recreation Area on August 17, 2022, in close proximity to where human remains were found.”
A police spokesman confirmed that the weapon found by the journalist was near where the barrel was found.
Two more sets of skeletal remains were found in the Swim Beach area this month.
Lake Mead was once at 1,200 feet (365 m) above sea level. But after more than 20 years of drought, it is shrinking rapidly.
Scientists say human-induced climate change is exacerbating natural drought cycles, fueled by the uncontrolled burning of hydrocarbons for energy.
