Liverpool stumble, Spurs shine in Premier League opening weekend

Liverpool’s Premier League title challenge got off to a poor start as the Reds went 2-2 at newly promoted Fulham. Tottenham, meanwhile, lived up to their pre-season hype with their 4-1 win over Southampton on Saturday.

Jürgen Klopp has admitted that the best part of Liverpool’s day was the result of the Champions League finalists having to come back twice at Craven Cottage.

The late arrival of Darwin Nunez revitalized Liverpool and the Uruguayan scored his first Premier League goal after a €75m ($77m) payout from Benfica to equalize.

However, Mohamed Salah scored an empty goal from a Nunez pass to at least prevent Liverpool from starting the season with a defeat.

“We are used to having more of an edge, but we didn’t achieve it because we played poorly, we didn’t have enough speed, we didn’t have enough precision.”

Tottenham, by contrast, got off to a dream start to their campaign to boost hopes that they could be in contention for their first league title in 61 years.

A goal to turn the game around before half-time came from an unlikely source as Ryan Sessegnon and Eric Dier headed home.

Dejan Kulusevski put Spurs ahead of Arsenal with a cool and accurate shot into the far corner.

Forest are ahead of Newcastle with 12 new signings so far, but have learned to step up to the Premier League at St James’ Park.

Bournemouth also thwarted pre-season gloom from lack of transfer activity with a 2–0 win over Aston Villa.

Leeds shrugged off losses to Calvin Phillips and Rafinha over the summer by beating the Wolves 2–1 at Elland Road.

Rodrygo equalized from a tight angle before Rayan Aitnouri’s own goal sealed the match in the 16th minute.
