A man died and a woman was hospitalized fighting for her life after her home was “engulfed” in flames Tuesday morning in western Sydney.
Firefighters were called to a one-story house on Eltham Street in Blacktown around 5 a.m. after receiving a report of the fire.
A man and a woman, as well as a third person, were pulled from the home by NSW fire and rescue services.
The man, believed to be in his 60s, was treated by paramedics but died at the scene. A woman in her 80s was taken to Westmead Hospital in critical condition.
Speaking to 2GB on Tuesday morning, NSW Fire Chief Luke Unsworth said early reports suggested a third person was also pulled from the house during the rescue, but at this time their It said the status was unknown.
“Some were potentially neighbors. They entered the premises to rescue some others. We’re still trying to piece things together,” he said.
An investigation into the fire is ongoing and anyone with information has been asked to contact police.
