Matanzas Oil Tank Fire Threatens Cuba’s Power Supply
A lightning strike caused a serious fire at an oil tank in Matanzas, Cuba, on Friday, August 5, officials said. Matanzas government officials reported that 77 people were injured in the fire and those in serious or critical condition were being treated. The president’s office reported that 17 firefighters “who were trying to contain the fire in the nearest area” were missing as of Saturday. The fires threaten the island’s power supply, which is already experiencing an energy crisis, and the government has spurred a planned power outage from the previous week, the report said.
