Medvedev advances to semi-finals of Mexico ATP event

World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev beat Lithuania’s Ricardas Berankis 6-2, 6-2 to advance to the semi-finals of the ATP event in Los Cabos, Mexico.

The defending U.S. Open champion Medvedev dropped just three points on his first serve before clinching a 79-minute win with his eighth ace.

Medvedev compared the match to his first victory over Australian qualifier Linkie Hijikata, saying, “It was very different.

“My opponent [today] We played very differently and more aggressively. Honestly, sometimes against that type of player there isn’t much to do. Return the ball to the court and try to serve it well.

“We did it. He made a few mistakes today, but that was enough.”

The 26-year-old is two wins away from his first title in 2022 and one away from securing the top spot in the ATP rankings until the end of the Grand Slam in New York.

“I like playing on hard courts. I’m playing great here so far,” Medvedev said of his confidence level.

“Of course, the further we go, the tougher the match, the tougher our opponents and the more pressure we have. But that’s what we like and we’re looking forward to tomorrow. .”

Russia’s top seed will face No. 4 Miomir Kecimanovic of Serbia, who defeated No. 6 Brandon Nakashima 6-2, 6-4.

Britt Cameron-Norry went by default in the first round and defeated Radu Albot 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) to advance to the quarterfinals.

The 12th-ranked Wimbledon semi-finalist recovered to break Albot twice after losing serve in the opening game to take the first set.

Norry expected another comfortable victory when he broke early in the second set to lead 5-3.

But Albot, ranked 118th in the world, reached a new level and took the tiebreaker to the next level.

A 32-year-old short volley at the net was quickly dispatched by Norrie and called for an early mini-break before taking a 4-1 lead, which ultimately ended in just under two hours.

Norrie will face second-seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime, who defeated American Steve Johnson 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).

The Canadian has never lost to Norrie and holds the record for head-to-head matches of 4-0.
