Microsoft Surface Laptop Go is trying

Microsoft Surface Laptop Go is a very good laptop. I think the following will give you a sense of déjà vu, but it’s still not so true. This is very expensive. This was a problem with many Microsoft products this year — extraordinary design, extraordinary quality, and extraordinary high prices. However, this Surface Laptop Go is by far the most functional and may not be the most unpleasant price of any Microsoft product of the year.

Microsoft Surface Laptop Go is Microsoft’s affordable laptop. Starting at $ 550 ($ 763), all versions have the same 10th generation Intel i5-1035 G1 processor. The $ US550 ($ 763) version also uses a 64GB eMMC drive for storage and relies on only 4GB of RAM. Microsoft does not provide this version for review, but it is primarily intended for users who do everything online. This is a type of Chromebook-style product that may actually require a fleshed-out OS. I was offered a $ US900 ($ 1,249) version. It adds a fingerprint reader to the power button, increases RAM to 8GB and storage to faster and larger 256GB SSDs. If you want to split the difference, there’s also a $ 700 ($ 971) version that halves the storage to 128GB, including everything the laptops reviewed here do.

what is that?

favorite

It’s well-built, looks good, and has a sufficiently fast processor.

Does not like

The resolution of the display is unstable and the boy gets hot.

But the HP Specter 13-inch costs $ 1,000 ($ 1,388), the Yoga C740 costs $ 880 ($ 1,221), or the Dell XPS 13 costs $ 900 ($ 1,249). All three laptops have a larger 1080p display. The Surface Laptop Go comes with a very strange 12-inch display with a resolution of 1536 x 1024. That’s just 148 pixels per inch. That may not seem like a big deal, but all of the laptops above are a few pixels more per inch, like the $ 1,000 ($ 1,388) MacBook Air Sport 227ppi. What this really means is that the fonts aren’t very sharp. I had to work on suggestions in Google Docs all weekend and set the font to medium or bold to make it look good on the screen. Laptops in this price range allow you to see individual pixels in the way we thought we’d moved a long time ago.

The disastrous pixel count per inch was really disappointing for the Surface Laptop Go. The screen is bright (343 knits!), The colors are vibrant, and the 3: 2 ratio is welcome, but more is expected of the display on Surface devices. These devices are considered to be the best way to experience Windows with the most beautiful hardware and the best screens. This doesn’t do it at all.

But the rest of the hardware is a huge success. Microsoft stored most of its devices in aluminum, so it’s lightweight, but heavy enough to feel a premium. The company has reduced the display bezel to the thinnest it’s seen on Surface devices. The lower half of the laptop is made of plastic, but it’s not the flimsy thing you’ll usually find on devices under $ 1,000 ($ 1,388). When I try to push the i5 processor it looks like it’s toasting, but when I push it it’s solid without giving. When I benchmarked it, I saw temperatures as high as 117 degrees Fahrenheit. If you plan to actually push this laptop, don’t plan to do so when it’s on your lap.

In everyday use, those temperatures were never reached. Processed hours of work in a marathon session with Google Docs Baldur’s Gate 3 Stadia understands that the Surface Laptop Go is an alternative to a nice Chromebook. As a benchmark, it handles far more apps than Chromebooks, but it’s not the fastest performance you can get on a laptop at this price.

The internally burned i5-1035G1 is a 10th generation, 10 nm, 4 core / 8 thread processor, but it’s also a 15W component, so it’s not intended for games or other types of countries. It took nearly 25 minutes to complete the Handbrake benchmark, 15:49 to complete the Blender CPU benchmark, and 17:37 to complete the Blender GPU benchmark. These numbers are comparable to other laptops running 15w CPUs, such as the Dell XPS 13 and Razer Blade Stealth. However, these laptops have a much better Intel Iris integrated GPU. As a result, they handle the game much better. For example, the Razer Blade Stealth gets 110fps in Overwatch. Surface Laptop Go manages only 19fps.

It’s unclear whether it’s a price issue or a heat issue that kept Iris graphics away from the Surface Laptop Go, but either way, it prevents good laptops from becoming exceptional.

Another thing that prevents it from being exceptional is battery life. Microsoft claims it will last for 13 hours. During mixed use, I was able to get a pretty good battery life. In the battery test, I set the display brightness to 200 nits and played the Youtube video until the battery ran out. Battery life was only 6 hours and 32 minutes. That’s … pretty terrible performance. I have contacted Microsoft to clarify this issue and are preparing my laptop for a third battery test. We will update this review if these numbers change.

Trackpads and keyboards are almost always the same as you would expect from a Microsoft device. The keyboard isn’t backlit — the living room lights automatically turn off at midnight, which I realized when I was still playing Baldur’s Gate — But the keys have a great trip to them (I found them a little too squeezed for my personal taste). The glass trackpad is smaller than what some users are accustomed to, but the size was fine. I felt it was too slippery compared to the movement of the mouse on the screen, but I could easily organize it by adjusting the speed of the cursor.

The built-in fingerprint scanner lights up brightly when you need to press it to unlock your computer. In rare cases, it may not light up to unlock it, but Windows Hello worked fine with a 720p web camera, so it’s not a hassle. This is a bug that Microsoft solves.

Top.

There is a 3.5mm audio jack and both USB-A and USB-C ports around the sides. The USB-C port also acts as a charging port if you have another laptop with USB-C like me. It was very convenient, but it was nice to have a dedicated Surface Connect port on the other side.

I’m paying close attention to the $ 900 ($ 1,249) price, but I don’t hate this laptop.Small enough and light enough to be perfect for use when sitting on the couch and looking Bree manners hangout Throughout the weekend, it was fast enough to handle most of the casual tasks I cast. If you’re suggesting a laptop to older kids or teenage friends, you might suggest a version of Surface Laptop Go. It’s durable and arguably the best looking laptop available in this price range. It can also handle all kinds of academic work and the workload of people doing more work through remote servers or the cloud. This isn’t a laptop to recommend to a budget friend who wants to do a lot of work, but it’s an expensive Windows 10 device if you’re away from work or want to find a Chromebook split. SurfaceLaptop Go is a solid midpoint.

README

  • I love this laptop as it starts at just $ 550 ($ 763)!
  • But $ 900 ($ 1,249) is too expensive compared to other laptops available at the same price.
  • This is for people who probably need a Chromebook but need Windows flexibility. Skip the most expensive version.
