A four-vehicle crash involving a truck on a Melbourne freeway has caused major traffic headaches, with vehicles banked up for 12 kilometres.

Three inbound lanes of the Monash Freeway have been closed at Yarra Boulevard following the collision on Wednesday morning.

Emergency services are directing traffic into the far right lane.

Motorists are advised to consider using Dandenong Road into the city instead and allow extra travel time.
