Russian plane crash: military jet crashes in city of Yeysk, houses on fire

Buildings go up in flames after a Russian fighter-bomber crashes in the city of Yeysk.

At least three people were killed and 15 injured.

A military jet engine caught fire during takeoff, causing the crash, according to Russian state media.

The Russian Defense Ministry said the Sukhoi Su-34 was on a training mission and the pilot successfully ejected before the crash.

Authorities are still assessing how many casualties were caused by the crash that caused extensive fires in the building and surrounding areas.

At least five floors of the skyscraper were damaged, and regional and local firefighters were battling the blaze.

Footage shows the plane exploding on board as it heads towards the building. A huge fireball then engulfed the apartment.

“On October 17, 2022, a Su-34 aircraft crashed while climbing to conduct a training flight from a military airfield in the Southern Military District,” the ministry said in a statement to the RIA.

“Ejected pilots report that the cause of the plane crash was the ignition of one of the engines during takeoff.

“Airplane fuel caught fire at the Su-34 crash site in the courtyard of a residential area.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin was informed of the fires and ordered “to provide all necessary assistance to victims of military aircraft accidents,” the Kremlin told state-run TASS news agency.

Yeysk is located near the Russian-occupied territories in southern Ukraine, near the Asov Sea.

“Everything is burning inside”

Oksana, a local resident who declined to give her surname, said the area was off-limits.

“There is a possibility of an explosion. Everything is burning inside. There is smoke,” she told AFP.

She said she got stuck in traffic when she heard the news.

“I am obviously in shock. My child was home alone. We were already going to bed with fear every day – Mariupol is right across from us,” she said.

Images on social media showed a Soviet-era settlement engulfed in flames. The fire reached his fifth of nine floors in the residence, according to emergency services cited by the Russian state agency.

The fire spread over more than 2,000 square meters, the service added.

About 600 people usually live in the building, the local Krasnodar administration told Telegram.

“The governor has ordered the whereabouts of each resident to be revealed,” the administration said.

Regional Governor Veniamin Kondratiev said: According to preliminary information, 17 flats are affected. “

Investigation start

The Commission of Inquiry, which investigates serious crimes, said it had opened a criminal investigation into the crash.

Mariupol, a port city on the Sea of Azov in southeastern Ukraine, has endured weeks of relentless Russian artillery fire as resistance concentrates in a dense network of underground tunnels at the Azovstal Ironworks.

It has been closed since the start of the Ukrainian offensive airspace around southern Russia.

The town of Yeysk is located in the Gulf of Taganrog in the Sea of Azov, opposite the Russian-controlled Ukrainian city of Mariupol. About 85,000 people live in the town.

Accidents involving Russian commercial aircraft and fighter jets are fairly common and are usually caused by technical glitches or human error.

In June, a military plane crashed in the city of Ryazan, southeast of Moscow, killing four and injuring five.
