Norway says Russia has boosted a cyberattack on parliament

“We consider this a serious and deliberate provocation that is detrimental to bilateral relations,” the embassy said in a statement emailed to Reuters.

When Norwegian officials announced the case in September, they did not say who they thought was behind the attack.

“The fact that we go out with attribution is a strong signal from the Norwegian authorities,” Soereide told reporters.

Norway wanted a practical relationship with Russia, but she added that it could not accept such an attack on its most important democratic institution. Asked if the attack would affect relations between Norway and Russia.

“We cannot accept that Congress is the target of such an attack.”

Norway, a NATO member, borders Russia in the Arctic Circle.

Hackers backed by the Russian state have been blamed for numerous cyberattacks on Western private and public institutions.

The latest includes attempts to steal COVID-19 vaccine research and hack a company working with US presidential candidate Joe Biden, who has also denied Russia.
