Luciano Leirua: NRL star fighting domestic violence charges

NRL star Luciano Leirua, who is set to battle domestic violence charges at a hearing next year, faces the possibility of missing the start of the 2023 season.

The North Queensland cowboy appeared in Campbelltown District Court on Tuesday to plead not guilty to two charges and is expected to face hearings next year.

His attorney, Ali El-Darwich, has filed a plea of not guilty on charges of general assault and destruction or damage to property.

His lawyers told the court last week that they were pushing for the charges to be dropped after the rearguard’s playing career was suspended as a result of being dropped by the NRL.

Leilua plans to contest the charges at a hearing in Campbelltown District Court on May 18 next year.

Police said the woman was called to her Harrington Park home on Oct. 3 after receiving reports that she had been assaulted.

“A 26-year-old woman is said to have been assaulted by a man she knew, with officers from Narellan Police Area Command present,” NSW Police said in a statement.

“Furthermore, the man allegedly smashed her phone after assaulting her.”

Leilua resigned earlier this month under the NRL’s no-fault policy, which barred players from taking the field until the matter in court was resolved.

He was also kicked out of Samoa’s World Cup team.

“This decision should not be construed as an opinion regarding the innocence or guilt of any player,” the NRL said in a statement.

“Because the criminal complaint included allegations that the player had committed violence in relation to a woman, a voluntary no-fault stoppage condition was applied in this case.

“Under these terms, a player cannot participate as a player in NRL competitions or national competitions.”
