Paul Green dies at 49, cause of death: Legendary rugby league player and NRL coach dies

The world of rugby mourns the sudden passing of premiership-winning coach Paul Green.

The 49-year-old died Thursday morning at his home in Brisbane.

A post-mortem will be performed to determine his cause of death.

Friends revealed that Green had not complained about his illness and was shocked and devastated by his death.

He has been regularly mentioned as a coaching option at many NRL clubs this season and was set to make a comeback in 2023.

This news came just three months later. The tragic death of his best friend and former Australian cricketer Andrew Simmonsrocked the wider sports community.

Green was in Sydney last weekend for the Cronulla Sharks reunion.

Green played for Cronulla, North Queensland, Sydney Roosters, Parramatta and Brisbane, winning the Rothmans Medal in 1995.

He is from Queensland and was a halfback for the Australian national team. As a coach, Green led the Cowboys to their first premiership in 2015.

His last coaching was with the State of Origin side in Queensland in 2021.

Green has a wife, Amanda, and children, Emerson and Jed.

Greene’s last public appearance at Shark Park

A smiling and excited Paul Greene hooked up with some of his closest associates on Saturday night, going back 25 years.

At the Sharks’ annual Old Boys Day at Cronulla’s Pointbet Stadium, Green, who represented the club from 1994 to 1998, applauded as he and his former teammates performed an honorable lap. I received a standing ovation.

“I’m happy to be back,” Green told Sharks ground announcer Dane Wheeler.

“It was a great night, a huge crowd and the weather was perfect for Shark Park so let’s hope the football is great.

“I have a lot of good memories and I’m happy to see you all today. I had a lot of laughs and the club did really well.”

Elsewhere, former Melbourne Storm and Maroons hooker Cameron Smith reacted to “shocking news” broadcast live on SEN Radio on Thursday.

“This is a sad day for all involved in the rugby league family and community. My heartfelt blessings and condolences to the entire Green family,” said Smith.
