Water police rescued two stranded jet skiers after a painful flare about 1 km off the coast near Brisbane.
Dramatic footage taken by the Queensland Police Porea helicopter shows rescue operations taking place in Bramble Bay late Monday afternoon.
Several people called the ambulance crew at 5:45 pm and said they had seen a flare of pain caused by a man about 1 km off Woody Point.
Water police and Porea responded by finding men with jet skis disabled and transporting them and their supplies (including those that look like Esky and fishing tackle) to the mainland.
David Edden, senior sergeant at the Brisbane Water Police Department, said the use of painful flares prevented men from being trapped in water more than necessary.
“Proper use of safety devices can make the difference between safe travel and tragedy,” said Sgt Edden.
“In this case, the distress signal warned the authorities and police were able to work swiftly to rescue the men and their ships before it got dark.”
