The Z-class trams (class 1 and 2 vehicles) built in the 1970s have been abolished, leaving 111 Z-class 3 trams on the network. Victoria currently operates 69 A-class trams.

Daniel Bowen, a spokesman for the Association of Public Transport Users, said some of the old trams are “quite devastated” and require ongoing maintenance work.
