Military plane crashes into building in Russia

A Russian fighter jet has crashed into a residence in the southern Russian city of Yeysk, a Russian news agency said, citing witnesses and the Ministry of Defense.

Unconfirmed footage on social media showed a large fireball erupting from what appeared to be a multi-story building.

The agency said the pilot had ejected and authorities were trying to establish information about casualties on the ground.

The RIA news agency said the plane was a Sukhoi Su-34, a supersonic medium-range fighter-bomber, that crashed during a training flight from a military airfield.

The TASS news agency said the cause of the crash was an engine fire.

Interfax quoted the local emergency ministry as saying the fire hit the fifth floor of an apartment building, causing the upper floors to collapse and about 45 apartments to be damaged.

Yeysk is located on the coast of the Sea of Azov, which separates southern Ukraine from southern Russia.
