Senior fighters in Israel attack on Gaza, killing more than 15

Senior Islamic jihadist militants, who killed more than 15 people in Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip on Friday, have urged militant groups to warn that Israel has “declared war”.

Children were among those killed in the strike, according to the enclave’s health ministry, but the Israeli army estimated that 15 militants were killed.

The Israeli military said the shelling was part of an operation “against targets of Islamic jihadist groups in Palestine”.

In response, Islamic Jihad announced that it had fired 100 rockets into Israel from Gaza.

“We call on all resistance forces and their military branches to respond to this aggression with a united front,” the Islamic Jihad said in a statement.

The Gaza Health Ministry reported that a “five-year-old girl targeted by Israeli occupation” was among the nine dead. A further 55 Palestinians were injured, the ministry said.

Islamic Jihad said several members of its military wing had been killed.Israeli tanks lined the border and the military said it was ramping up its forces on Thursday.

A spokesman for the Israeli military said it “assumes about 15 people were killed in action” in Gaza, referring to Palestinian fighters.

A major supporter, Islamic Jihad leader Ziad Al-Nahra, who is visiting Iran, told Lebanon’s Al Mayadeen TV, “Tel Aviv… will be one of the targets of the Resistance’s missiles. …as in all Zionist cities.”

“Pay the fee”

The strike comes four days after Israel closed two border crossings with Gaza and restricted the movement of Israeli civilians living near the border, citing security concerns.

The action follows the arrest in the occupied West Bank of two senior members of the Islamic Jihad, which has a strong presence in Gaza.

Hamas, the militant group that controls Gaza, said Israel had “committed a new crime for which it must pay”.

In a statement, Hamas said, “All armies and factions of resistance will unite and speak loudly in this struggle. All fronts must open fire on the enemy.”

Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid was scheduled to meet with Defense Minister Benny Gantz on Friday night.

Islamic Jihad has been blacklisted as a terrorist organization by the European Union and the United States.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said the Israeli military action amounted to a “dangerous escalation”.

“The president called on the international community to force Israel to stop this attack against our people everywhere,” said a statement released by Palestinian official news agency Wafa.

On Friday afternoon, the Israeli army banned large gatherings in communities within 80 kilometers (50 miles) of the Gaza border until Saturday evening.

The measure follows a four-day road closure and other travel restrictions in border areas.

Palestinians, including patients, and those with Israeli work permits have been barred from leaving the Gaza Strip since Tuesday, and the passage of goods has also been closed.

Gaza’s only power plant is in danger of imminent shutdown due to a shortage of fuel supplies via Israel, its manager warned Thursday.

This week’s closure of border areas follows attacks by security forces in the northern West Bank of Jenin.

Israeli forces have detained Bassem al-Saadi and another senior member of Islamic Jihad. A 17-year-old member of the group was shot dead by Israeli forces during the raid.
