Simple ways to prevent “Maskne”


If you’ve experienced more flare-ups since we all started wearing face masks to prevent the spread of COVID-19, you’re not alone.

In fact, countless people who did not suffer from persistent acne find themselves continually breaking out from wearing a mask for hours.


While wearing a mask is essential and very important in stopping the spread of COVID-19, it is normal to feel disappointed with what it is doing on your face.

But fear not, because there are a few easy things you can do to bring your unwanted maskne under control.

Material issues

Be sure to pay attention to the makeup of your face mask, as this may be what is causing the rashes.

Face masks made from cotton or polyester blends may be gentler on the skin and not cause irritation. Some people are also turning to silk masks, as these tend to be more breathable.

Wash your mask (and your face)

As much as the material matters, it’s just as important to make sure you wash your masks regularly.

In fact, masks should really only be worn once before tossing them in the washing machine (think of it like underwear), as these things get dirty quickly.

Likewise, be sure to wash your face! We all understand the importance of washing your face on a normal basis, but to prevent those pesky pimples from appearing, you need to make sure to wash your face as soon as you get home after wearing a mask.

Take it easy on makeup

Wearing masks has really thrown a key in the makeup process, but now might be a great time to tone down the amount of makeup you put on each day and let your skin breathe.

Keeping your skin clear enough will prevent the pores from getting clogged, which will then turn into acne.

Since most people won’t be able to see the lower half of your face anyway, take this time to go natural.

Focus on skin care

Instead of worrying about makeup, spend some time tidying up a good skincare routine.

As we mentioned earlier, be sure to wash your face with a gentle cleanser and find a light moisturizer that won’t clog your pores.

However, don’t go overboard with constant masks, aggressive toners and scrubs for the face. The softer and easier we are on our skin, the better it will respond.

Ultimately, it may take a while to figure out, but you’ll find a routine that works great!
