Sparks fly as historic military aircraft land on the Arizona airfield

Images shared by the Mesa Fire and Medical Department in Arizona show that a historic military aircraft is making a dramatic belly landing at Falcon Field Airport after a failed landing gear deployment. The aircraft was reportedly the former Navy’s North American T6, which was used to train pilots during World War II and the 1970s. In a statement, Captain Mike Castillo of the Mesa Fire and Medical Department said the plane’s landing gear had a hydraulic failure that prevented it from landing. “The plane was instructed by the tower to do multiple flybys to burn the fuel before making a belly landing safely,” the statement said. Two passengers were on board at the time of the accident, and they were able to get off the plane without injury after landing, according to people familiar with the matter.
