Tesla shows two TeslaBot prototypes. One from a third party part and one from Tesla.

Tesla’s AI Day 2022 is underway, and the event kicked off with the unveiling of not one but two Teslabot prototypes.

The first consisted of third-party parts and walked the stage without a tether for the first time. He then moved around the stage and waved to the audience.

It’s impressive to have a working walking humanoid robot in just over a year, but with the exposed wires, it looked pretty rudimentary.

The audience was shown a short clip of the robot moving around the Gigafactory (using a tether) and being able to pick up objects in the factory. We also see some visions and first aspects from TeslaBot.

Following this, Musk announced another improved TeslaBot. It’s not quite walkable on its own, but it’s much closer to the desired form factor with the look. Musk says it was developed using components developed by Tesla. The difference between the two is quite large and you can expect to be able to walk naturally within a few weeks.

Elon Musk explained that TeslaBot’s social benefits can only be realized if TeslaBot is mass-produced and is expected to end up costing less than US$20,000.
