One of the most iconic lines in Australian film history has turned out to be mostly edited from Muriel’s Wedding.
Gabby Milgate, who played Joanie Hesslop in the 1994 movie, reveals in tonight’s episode of SBS Insight Her line “You are terrible, Muriel” was almost left on the floor of the cutting room.
“I was convinced that it would be cut out of the movie,” says the actress. Insight.. “(Film editor) Jill Bilcock convinced him (director PJ Hogan) that he should keep it because he loses magic when he sees things over and over again.”
The line has become iconic and has since been referred to by international stars such as Will Ferrell and Madonna, who dropped during the show. Jonathan Ross Show In England.
Milgate explains why this line has struck a chord with so many people. Insight: “It was our little jealousy that was pleased that your brother or sister, or someone better than you, was in trouble.”
Muriel’s wedding, Streamed on Foxtel, this movie was Millgate’s first on-screen role, and it opened another door for her in the entertainment industry.
“It took me to TV, radio and I started working at the Outback ABC,” she says. Insight.. “It gave me a really great adventurous life, and then when I went a little beyond the entire entertainment world, I started working in early childhood education care.”

Milgate is currently working at the Child Care Center in Canberra, teaching children about sustainability. She is no longer happy.
“My story is a happy ending because I’m with kids and ducks, and the outdoors and nature,” she says at the SBS show.
