NSW Premier Dominic Perrotet said the Opera House will be illuminated in pink to commemorate Newton-John’s “tremendous contributions to the research and awareness of cancer”.
The British-born actor and singer, who considers herself Australian and has spent part of her life in the country, survived breast cancer in the 1990s and became a dedicated cancer researcher. became an advocate.
“Olivia Newton-John touched millions of people around the world not only with her music, but especially with her compassion and kindness to cancer patients.
“She was a positive glow during her lifetime, and now our most famous performance space shines in her honor.”
The sails were set to light up at sunset on Thursday.
NSW Arts Minister Ben Franklin also praised Newton-John.
“For decades, Olivia Newton-John has inspired Australians with her artistic ability and tireless courage,” said Franklin.
“It is a moving tribute that the Sydney Opera House, where she has performed so many times, will be dyed pink in her honor tonight.”
The day before, the Victorian government honored Newton John with its own pink light show at several landmarks.
Newton-John broke internationally with his role as the heart-pounding Sandy in the 1978 musical film Grease.
