Rival revealed if Russian Makhachev wins UFC title

Dana White believes it makes sense for Alexander Volkanovski to fight for the next lightweight title?

UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanowski will have a chance to win the double division title this weekend when he faces Islam Makhachev and Charles Oliveira’s lightweight title match winner, promotions president Dana White said.

Volkanovski has recently been eyeing a chance to move up to lightweight and fight for the top spot.

“I deserve it,” claimed the Australian, who is currently rated as the top pound-for-pound fighter by the UFC.

Speaking to Robbie Fox of Barstool Sports on Monday’s podcast, White Said It “makes sense” for Volkanowski to challenge the winner of the UFC 280 headline match for the lightweight title.

It could be either former 155lbs champion Oliveira or Dagestan’s grappling phenomenon Makhachev.

And Volkanowski, who is lined up as a substitute in Abu Dhabi on Saturday, said he is rooting for Brazil’s Oliveira to regain the title he lost on the scale before stopping Justin Gaethje at UFC 274.

“I think Charles is a better match,” Volkanovsky said during a television appearance. MMA Hour.

“People say it’s stylistically, but there’s clearly a lot of hype around Charles.

“Everyone thinks he’s the champion, so if I beat him, everyone will think I’m the champion.

“I’m sure if I played Islam, people would still say I’m the champion, but I’d still have to beat Charles. You play Charles. It’s a bigger It’s going to be a fight because he has a lot of hype.

After defending the title four times, last defeating Max Holloway in the third, Volkanovski ran out his opponent by £145.

At 34, he’s at the peak of his power, and it’s the perfect moment for him to venture into the lightweight division.

With the UFC confirming it will return to Australia in February, UFC 284, which takes place at Perth’s RAC Arena, looks to offer the perfect platform for potential superfights.

However, Oliveira, who has persistently expressed a desire to face Conor McGregor in his hometown, may be disappointed that he will have to head Down Under if he beats Makachev.

“It’s perfect” Oliveira Confirmed When asked about his clash with former featherweight and lightweight champion McGregor, McGregor turned to the Neo Kimika Arena in São Paulo, home of his favorite football team, Corinthians.

“It’s been my opinion for a long time. Fighting Conor is very good,” Oliveira added.
