Tim Tszyu fight cancelled in devastating development

Tim Tszyu’s anticipated bout with Virgil Orgil has been canceled. The Australian boxer was scheduled to face the undefeated American on August 3, but Californian doctors intervened, halting the fight due to Tszyu’s lingering head injury from his previous bout with Sebastian Fundora in March.

No Limit, Tszyu’s promoters, confirmed the disappointing news on Friday, citing the severity of Tszyu’s head wound as the reason for the cancellation. CEO George Rose expressed frustration, stating that while Tszyu demonstrated remarkable resilience in his fight against Fundora, medical professionals deemed it unsafe for him to continue.

The Californian doctors have instructed Tszyu to refrain from sparring for an additional six weeks, extending his recovery period. Previously, Tszyu was medically suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission until May 15 following his Las Vegas fight.

This setback adds to the challenges Tszyu has faced this year, including the cancellation of his world title rematch with Fundora. Additionally, the WBO’s decision to name Terence Crawford as Fundora’s next opponent further alters Tszyu’s career trajectory.

Tszyu’s bout with Orgil was intended to be the co-main event on the Crawford-Madrimov card in Los Angeles. However, with Tszyu’s withdrawal, a replacement opponent for Orgil is being arranged.

Tszyu’s journey back to a world title fight now faces uncertainty, especially given the competitive landscape of the super welterweight division. Despite his brave decision to face Orgil, the road ahead remains challenging, with no clear path to a championship opportunity in the near future.
