FIFA and Indonesia to improve football stadium

FIFA president Gianni Infantino and Indonesian president Joko Widodo have agreed to reassess safety measures at stadiums across the country after more than 130 people were killed in a recent crowd stampede.

Indonesia and FIFA, the Southeast Asian country gearing up to host the U-20 World Cup next year, have closed world football operations after agreeing to form a joint task force following the stadium tragedy. The head of the organization met with President Widodo in Jakarta.

Infantino said the U20 Cup required a state-of-the-art stadium, but his top priority in Indonesia was to reform and transform the country’s football.

FIFA will set up an office in Indonesia to oversee the entire football transformation process.

Infantino said: “Thanks to football fans, we feel safe and secure when watching the game.

Widodo said the Kanjurhan stadium, where the deadly stampede occurred, will be demolished and rebuilt.

The cause of the runaway was police firing tear gas onto the pitch, a crowd control measure banned by FIFA.

Under pressure to explain what caused one of the world’s deadliest stadium disasters, a fact-finding team formed by the government last week found “excessive” and “indiscriminate” use of tear gas. released a report that concluded it was the leading cause of death.
