UK pubs turn to candles as utility bills soar

London: Two pub owners in Cornwall are turning to candlelight to combat rising energy prices.

Camelford’s Mason’s Arms will be lit by candles only on Monday, while Truro’s Thomas Daniel will do the same on the 1st of next month.

Alan Woods, who has run the pub for more than four years, said it was to keep electricity bills down and provide a new atmosphere.

he said: It was known as the King’s Arms.

“Take a step back in time when the entire pub is lit by candles. We have regular and autumn menus available. will also help.”

Woods said he wanted to save money and remind people that small local businesses are suffering just like individuals.Jamie Hilton-Lavender, manager of The Thomas Daniell, said Oct. 4 I plan to turn it off today.

“Everyone struggles with the cost of living,” Hilton Lavender said. “It’s getting out of control.” His tavern is closed Mondays and Tuesdays because electricity prices have skyrocketed. He added:

Woods said operating costs have forced many pubs to close early, cut menu items or even lay off workers. He said things got “crazy” when the country came out of COVID.
