Gerald Ryan says Williamsburg should be a contender for Spring Champion Stakes

Trainer Gerald Ryan can’t believe Gunn Colt Williamsburg isn’t a favorite in Saturday’s Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m).

Williamsburg is on the third line in the $6 bet on TAB for the $2m feature for 3-year-olds, and Caulfield Guineas winner Golden Mile is unlikely to race.

Victorian Raider and Guinea runner-up Elliptical tops the market at $3.50, while Kiwi Visitor Sharp ‘N’ Smart is second at $5.

Sharp ‘N’ Smart, trained by Graham and Deborah Rogerson, won the rescheduled Gloaming Stakes at Warwick Farm last week, beating Williamsburg on his first start in Australia.

Williamsburg were third in fast break in the same event, but retreating from 1800m to 1600m and away from Randwick was not a good fit.

“As I have told the owner, and as I have said publicly, the 1600m at Warwick Farms was not my choice to run that horse. And I thought he was great.” .

“We were able to beat why he’s not a favorite[for the spring champions].

“He’s been great. He’s done well and has the 2000m record all around him.

“He is doing very well.”

Williamsburg had won the Listed Dulcify two games ago and expected Ryan to wrap up the 2000m from his two-year-old season.

Kerrin McEvoy continues her partnership with the Colt in the Spring Champion Stakes and is looking to become the stable’s second Group 1 winner this spring.

Ellsberg, winner of Saturday’s Five Diamond Prelude, shares the Epsom Handicap honors in the top ranks, while Ryan and Alexiu have also enjoyed stakes success in recent weeks with Sky Command A Lot More Love.

Meanwhile, Bjorn Baker is planning to back up the impressive Renaissance Woman, and is expected to have two fillies side by side for the three-year-old feature.

The Reliable Man filly started last Saturday in the Group 3 Ethereal Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield and returned to Sydney to be ridden by Rachel King.

Renaissance Woman sits on the same line as fellow filly She’s Extreme bets at $7.
