Great Jewish presence on ice this NHL season – Australian Jewish News

according to JTAThe National Hockey League (NHL) is currently the North American professional sports league with the second largest number of Jewish players, after Major League Baseball.

Here are the top Jewish players to watch for the new season starting this week.

Jack Hughes (New Jersey Devils, center)

Multiple injuries kept the number one pick in the 2019 NHL Draft on the ice after 19 games last season. Still, there is hope that Jack Hughes will reach his superstar potential. He scored only 26 goals and he scored 56 points (goals and assists) in 49 games last season.

Quinn Hughes (Vancouver Canucks, defense)

Last season, Hughes’ oldest brother, Quinn, set a Canucks franchise record for defensive defense with a whopping 68 points. He scored just eight of those points, but Quinn cemented his position as a top playmaker. His goal this season is to have more scoring chances.

Zach Hyman (Edmonton Oilers, forward)

After six years with the Toronto Maple Leafs, forward Zach Hyman signed with the Edmonton Oilers last summer and has never looked back. The left winger had a brilliant run in his 2021-2022 season, scoring a career-high 27 goals and his 54 points in 76 games, including his 11 goals in 16 playoff games.

Adam Fox (New York Rangers, Defense)

Adam Fox wasn’t the best defense in the NHL last season, but the 2021 Norris Trophy winner was still in top form. He scored 11 goals in 78 appearances and scored 74 points, including 5 goals in the playoffs. During the preseason, Fox wore an “A” (meaning acting captain) on his jersey, leading to speculation that he’s in the leadership mix this season.

Jason Zucker (Pittsburgh Penguins, forward)

After an offseason rest and rehab following an injury-plagued 2021-22 NHL season, Jason Zucker appears to be back in top shape. He looked healthy and fast as he scored the winning goal to help open pre-season.

Jacob Chiklun (Arizona Coyote, Defense)

A good way to measure a player’s talent and value is who gets in line to trade him when he wants to move teams. His stock is still rising, with several teams showing interest in the 24-year-old former first-round draft pick since he revealed he would be on board.

Mark Freedman (Pittsburgh Penguins, defense)

This could be a breakout season for 26-year-old Mark Friedman. Friedman played only 16 games in his first three NHL seasons. However, last season he played in his 26 and earned playing time in the playoffs as well.

Luke Kunin (San Jose Sharks, Center)

Luke Kunin was traded from the Nashville Predators to the San Jose Sharks in July. He appeared in all of his 82 games for Nashville last year, scoring 13 goals. As long as he can get along with his new teammates, anything is possible. JTA
