NSW Transport Minister David Elliott said the government will take the Rail, Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) to federal court over Thursday’s strike. Opal card reader turns off in sydney.

Some Opal card gates will be closed indefinitely from 3pm to 7pm on weekdays as part of the ongoing industrial action of the Railway Union.

Elliott said the union’s actions were illegal because they were “unprotected.”

“We will go to federal court to seek damages and repayment from the RTBU for the loss of income that NSW taxpayers will lose in the course of this lawsuit,” he said.

“I am calling on RTBU to put this action aside.

“You are only risking the lives of commuters and denying taxpayers NSW revenue.”

Elliott acknowledged the “financial burden” the union would face if the lawsuit were successful.

The government claims the strike will affect customers, as some readers will work and others will not.

Sydney Trains CEO Matt Longlund said:

“Keep tapping on your Opal card when the reader is on. We will do everything we can in the background with the Opal system to manage customer impact.”

Longland said three-quarters of Sydney stations without gated opal readers will remain operational.
