UNSW professor emeritus of political science Karl Thayer said China’s ambassador Xiao Qian’s speech at the National Press Club on Wednesday was “a silver-tongued diplomat with an iron fist covered in gloves” .

Professor Thayer told Sky News Australia, “This is here to promote the use of public information, the media, warfare, psychological warfare and legal battles to convince Australia that it is time for a reset. .

“And encourage elements within Australia that benefit from this relationship to put pressure on the government to re-establish ties with China.”
